Role models

I got to thinking about how fortunate I am to have so many wonderful role models in life. Just having the parents and sisters I have would be enough — they have always been wonderful examples of faith, love and the value of hard work. But since I’ve been on my own I’ve been blessed with many others, non-relatives, who have taken the time to help me learn from their experiences.

In my new job at SMU I think I have at least two such people. One is my boss, the other the boss of my boss’s boss. I’ve had a couple of conversations with them today that have proven to me that they really care a lot about helping me make the most of my career and my work. I talked with them both about the law school thing, half expecting them to discourage me from pursuing it, and their reactions were quite the opposite.

I think if you’re lucky in life you get a handful of people who have been where you want to go, and if you ask, will help you get there. I realized today that I am more than lucky.
