Jerks on the road

Last week, 85 degrees. This morning, 25. Chelsea and I went to Fort Worth last night for our friend Jen’s birthday party. On the way back, it was misting a little bit but the roads didn’t seem like a big deal.

I guess we were one of the lucky ones that didn’t hit an icy patch, because as we got closer to Dallas we saw more and more cars off on the shoulder, parked at weird angles that wouldn’t have been the drivers’ first choices. Traffic was backed up about a mile from our exit, and once we got there we discovered that one car had flipped over in the middle of the freeway and got two other cars entangled. I haven’t seen a report on injuries from that, but the paramedics made it to the scene quickly so hopefully nothing was too serious.

What irks me are the people who go nuts trying to pass the backed-up traffic. When the backup first started, people were pulling u-turns off the road and driving the wrong way up exit ramps to try to get out of the jam. Then there were a good number of jerks who decided they should pass everybody by driving on the shoulder, only to have to get back in the pack five cars up. Those dudes need to have their cars taken away. What’s the rush that they have to make their own lanes of traffic to pass four or five people?!

I’ve had my one ice-related wreck back in my college days in conditions like this where you can’t tell what is ice and what is road, so Chelsea and I may stick close to the fire today.
