The sweetest thing
My first night of law school orientation was Monday, and I accomplished something great.
I stayed awake through the whole thing!
Coming from someone who unfortunately dozed through more than my share of classes in college, that’s a big first step. Now the next challenge will be: participating! The dean gave a talk about five themes of American constitutionalism and called on a few people, and I didn’t raise my hand to volunteer any answers. Baby steps. Baby steps.
The best part of the whole night was when orientation ended. I had to run across the street to my desk to change something on the SMU homepage, and when I finished I called Chel to let her know I was headed home. When she picked up the phone, it sounded like she was in the middle of a crowd of people.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“Just come to the big collegiate-looking thing in the middle,” she said.
Chelsea and Addy had come to school to surprise me with a Pokey O’s ice cream sandwich! The girls had met most of the orientation leaders and a few professors while they were waiting.
“I feel like it’s my husband’s first day of kindergarten!” Chel told my legal writing professor.
“Yeah, it’s like that,” Professor Cross responded.
And there’s no better way to end your first day of kindergarten than to get an ice cream sandwich and play with your puppy. Now, as for my whole plan to actually lose weight in law school…
